Learn how to choose the right shot glass for whiskey, vodka, or liqueurs. Practical tips for serving shots with Duralex glassware.
Quick Answer
Match the spirit's character to the glass shape: low-profile glasses like Duralex Le Picardie suit whiskey, while clear, stackable designs like Le Gigogne work well for layered shots.
Why Glass Matters for Shots
The shape, thickness, and clarity of a shot glass affect how you perceive the spirit's aroma, temperature, and mouthfeel. A wide-brimmed glass lets more oxygen in, softening the alcohol burn, while a narrow one concentrates the scent. Thicker glass insulates the drink slightly, keeping it cooler for a moment longer.
Duralex tempered glass is known for its durability and resistance to thermal shock, so it can handle a quick rinse between pours without cracking. This makes it practical for home bars and parties where glasses get frequent use.
How to Pair Shot Glasses with Different Spirits
- Identify the Spirit Type: Start by deciding whether you are serving a clear spirit (vodka, gin, white rum), a dark spirit (whiskey, bourbon, dark rum), or a liqueur. Each has a different ideal glass shape. Using a whiskey glass for vodka won't ruin the drink, but you'll miss the subtle aromas that a narrower rim preserves.
- Choose a Glass Shape That Complements the Spirit: For dark spirits like whiskey, use a low-profile glass with a wide opening, such as the Duralex Le Picardie shot. For clear spirits, a straight-sided glass like Le Gigogne works well because it doesn't trap heat. For layered liqueurs, a clear, straight-sided glass shows off the colors. A wide-brimmed glass can make a strong spirit seem smoother; a narrow one can intensify the alcohol burn.
- Consider Glass Thickness and Temperature: Thicker glass (like Duralex tempered) keeps the drink slightly cooler for a few seconds, which can mellow the alcohol bite. Thinner glass warms up faster, releasing more aroma. For a neat whiskey, a thicker glass is a bonus. If you are serving a frozen shot (e.g., chilled vodka), a thinner glass helps the cold feel more immediate.
- Match the Glass Capacity to the Pour: Standard shot pours are 1.5 oz (about 4.4 cl) to 2 oz (about 6 cl). Duralex shot glasses hold 9 cl (about 3 oz), giving you room for a generous pour or a cocktail with ice. If you prefer a smaller serving, fill only halfway. Don't overfill a 9 cl glass with a 2 oz pour – leave headspace for aroma and for easy handling.
